A woman broke down in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday as she recalled her first encounter with her brother, Sibusiso Mahlangu, whom the family believed they had buried in 2022.

Mahlangu and his wife, Lerato, are on trial for allegedly killing Lerato’s former lover, Sibusiso Sithebe, in an attempt to fake his death for insurance policy payouts. They face a count of murder and three counts of fraud.

The couple were arrested in April 2023 after Mahlangu was found in possession of a stolen car in Hammanskraal. Upon his arrest and processing, it was discovered that he was registered as deceased.
