There are many versions of Sheermal in different Indian cities and it is commonly found in older areas. In many cities of India, Sheermal is round, which is made with saffron. However, in Bhopal, it takes a rectangular shape. They use Buffalo milk for soften the dough, as it has a natural sweetness in it. Some cooks also add kewra essence to it and also add cloves in Bhopal
Lucknow even has Sheermal Wali Gali, which was established during the reign of the Nawabs and is an entire street full of bakeries that will entice you with the aroma of freshly baked bread. You will also find other types of flatbreads like Naan, Bakarkhani and Taftan in this street. There is a Persian proverb, ‘Naan-e-Lucknow, shireen ast’, which means that Lucknow’s Sheermal is the sweetest bread.
