The government is looking forward to the India‘s telecom sector, startup ecosystem and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) to perform and compete globally, a top official of the The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said.

“We want India and its industry, startups, and MSMEs to perform and compete in the telecom world which is not easy to compete in,” DoT Secretary, Neeraj Mittal Thursday said.

Mittal was speaking at the theme launch of the India Mobile Congress – 2024.

The official said that historically, there were several barriers in the journey of startups and MSMEs related to certifications and patents.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is facilitating startups and MSME sector through a series of schemes, as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) ambition to cut dependency of global supply chain.

“India’s telecom promise has unfolded over the last decade, and everybody’s aware about the success of the 5G revolution in India.”

In October 2022, incumbent telcos – Jio and Airtel – started commercial 5G network deployments, making the country as the fastest 5G rollout country in the world.

Mittal further said that the capacity building and scaling is a critical aspect which is more relevant for the country’s burgeoning telecom sector.

“With the recent progressive reforms and initiatives from the government, India is on its path to becoming a hub for technological innovation and is witnessing setting up of multiple manufacturing facilities by major players in India,” SP Kochhar, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

This year, the DoT together with the private industry is organising the 8th edition of the India Mobile Congress from October 15-18, 2024, showcasing technological innovation by bringing together industry leaders from multiple countries.
