Gullak is back with season four. Starring Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Jameel Khan and Harsh Mayar in the lead, the show revolves around the Mishra family as they tackle their everyday middle-class problems and parenting dilemmas. It is now streaming on Sony LIV.

I always believe that since we watch a lot of thrillers, crime dramas or action-related films/shows on OTT, it is always a delight whenever light-hearted, fun-to-watch shows like Panchayat or Yeh Meri Family release. However, Gullak proved me wrong.

Season four of Gullak disappoints primarily because of one reason – its plot. The show is badly written. It fails to carry forward the legacy of the previous three seasons because no effort has been paid into its plot. Gullak 4 looks merely a compilation of a few scenes from a middle-class household. In each of its episodes, it raises certain questions about parenting, expense-management or sibling relations but it does not explore these aspects.

There is no beginning or end to this show. You can start watching it from any particular episode, anywhere. Not because it is presented so well that anybody could understand but because there is nothing in the show to understand. There is no build-up to the climax simply because there is no climax.

The show’s title i.e. Gullak has also not been justified well in season four. Even though Gullak is the narrator of the show, by the end of episode five, you are only left wondering if the anchor was even needed. Gullak, the narrator, only talks about how a small family with limited income in a rural household manage their daily expense. It fails to add any depth or meaning to the show.

It is worth noting that Gullak 4’s release came two months after the release of Yeh Meri Family 3 and a week after Panchayat 3 premiered on Prime Video. These two shows set high standards for any light-hearted, middle class or rural background series. And therefore, the weak plot of Gullak 4 leaves you disappointed.

Since we mentioned Panchayat, if you have watched the show (or even if you haven’t), you know how love actress Sunita Rajwar has been getting for her performance as Kranti Devi. Interestingly, Sunita is also a part of Gullak 4. But her talent is completely wasted. She is given very little screen time and a character who does not add anything to the plot. However, in this limited screen time too, she presents her brilliant acting skills and wins hearts.

Other actors like Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Geetanjali Kulkarni or Jameel Khan have also played their parts with utmost perfection. The amount of effort they have put in to bring life to their respective characters is visible on screen. However, since the biggest loophole is the show’s plot, their talents could also not save it.

Overall, Gullak has become boring with season 4. Watch it at your own risk.
