At least three firefighters have died after being caught in a runaway fire in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Sunday.

Midlands EMS CEO Mark Winterboer confirmed that seven firefighters had been alive when paramedics arrived on the scene, but three had died as a result of their injuries.

Another four were transported to hospital with 100% burn wounds.

Winterboer added that medics are still on the ground treating those injured in the blaze, but initial estimates are that as many as 20 firefighters could be dead.

The province has experienced multiple fires this week.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
