NHI or status quo? The answer is neither. There is a better way.
The NHI, as proposed by the government, is reckless and unworkable.
It is unworkable because it is simply not possible to mobilise the sum required to fund it (another R200 billion) from taxpayers. It is reckless because instead of building on the quality healthcare that is available to the few, it risks undermining the private healthcare system in the process of building NHI.
